This might be because about 85 percent of their diet is made up of things other than meat. True, they will eat practically any thing, however, they prefer food with large amounts of sugar and energy such as wheat, apples and berries. They also eat grubs and many sorts of bugs.
This doesn't mean their are absolutely no injuries caused by black bears. In fact, in the north and west they are quite aggressive. Mr. Powell said, that the amount of injuries is due to the high number of the animals.
Even before any one came to settle in the country there were an estimated one million black bears. There are now 300 million bears; 300-600 of these live in Shenandoah National Park, said Mr. Powell.
Bears lice alone and usually only come together for mating purposes. The cub is carried for four months, all of which the mother spends sleeping. If the mother knows there is not enough food to feed the cub she will not mate.
After the cub is born the animals go about their business in a normal manner. The females will travel between one and 10 miles a day. The male, who has by this point, left the family, will travel up to 100 miles a day.
Bears also have great homing devices. One bear. Rambling Rose, was taken from her home and repeatedly found her way back.
One sign of a bear home is their territorial marks, particularly scratches, that are left on trees. The animals are often very possessive with the territory.
