jewel of the French Renaissance, completed in 152!. Henri II gave the chateau to his mistress, Diane de Poitiers, as a gift but Henri’s wife, Catherine de Medici, wrested it back from her upon his death. The twostory galler\ wing, added by Catherine, stretches across the river and, when completed, became the site of many court festivities. During World War I, the long gallery served as a hospital for wounded soldiers, and during the German occupation in WWII, one side was in a free zone, the other in occupied France.
Tales abound of desperate families running frantically through the 200-foot long gallery to the woods on the other side of the chateau. With the sun filtering in the open windows and the tranquility of the drowsy Cher, it is hard to imagine the torment and pathos of both those sad periods unfolding here.
