Three themes dominated the athletic awards banquet at Rappahannock County High School last week:
• The spunk of the athletes who were repeatedly praised for “never giving up,” despite losing seasons;
• The donations of money, time and labor that make RCHS’s program possible;
• The need for RCHS’s athletes to live up to their status as role models for students following in their footsteps.
The 320 banquet attendees were about evenly divided between athletes and their family members.
Willie Eastham and Cari Kerr walked away with two of the top prizes of the evening. Willie received the Rappahannock News Athletic Awhrd and Cari received the RCHS Best Athlete award. Both were praised for being “scholar athletes,” a designation given to students who stay on the honor roll while playing sports.
By the end of the evening, Willie and Cari — an easily recognized couple at RCHS, with one almost always near the other and both towering gracefully over their fellow students — were sitting with numerous trophies at their feet for their roles in basketball (both) in baseball (him) and in softball (her).
