Sheriff Gary Settle answered that no lockers were searched, but the dogs did stop and paw at certain ones, causing the banging sound. “The dogs can sniff the residue of drugs on clothing or personal belongings," said the sheriff. But he added that the handlers are able to distinguish between the dogs’ reactions to residual odor and their reaction to the actual presence of drugs.
No lockers were searched because no actual drugs were detected, said the sheriff. There were also no weapons detected.
Mr. Raines and assistant principal Mike Tupper were in the hall during the banging of the lockers, presumably observing which students’ lockers caused the dogs to pause.
Mr. Raines said that students should be aware that "searches will be conducted periodically from now on” in order to ensure that RCHS remains a “drug-free zone.”
