Association of Surveyors. District winners like Mike are entered into the state contest. If Mike wins at the state level later this month, he will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the national contest in Colorado, sponsored by the National Association of Surveyors.
Last year a student from RCHS placed second in the state, so Mrs. Herman is hopeful that Mike will do as well or better this year.
Mrs. Herman sees that all her students compete in the Trig-Star contest. She and Vicki Eastham also enter their students on the Virginia Mathematics League contests. Mrs. Herman says it is gratifying to see that RCHS often out-scores much larger and more prestigious schools in the contest.
“It’s nice to receive confirmation that I am teaching them something and that, yes, they are learning something,” she said. “I think it’s important for the students to see that they are competitive with those from bigger schools.”
She added that the “winner is never who they [the students] think it is going to be. It’s often someone who hasn’t received accolades in some other way.”
In Mike’s case, however, he has received at least one other accolade. He and all three of his siblings were honored at last week’s athletics banquet for being “scholar athletes.” Mike was on the varsity soccer team this year.
