County Budget

Since none of the public present for the public hearing on the county’s budget chose to make a statement, Board of Supervisors Chairman Hubert Gilkey was prepared to close the shortest budget hearing in recent memory.

Instead the public was treated to a very brief political science lesson as County Administrator John McCarthy explained that much of the expected tax increase is due to mandates from the state and federal governments, and the county is left with no viable alternative to the real estate tax for raising revenues.
