3. In modern times no Virginian has done more for national defense than John Warner. And he has seen to it that Virginia gained and kept the largest share of the economic benefits therefrom. Can Virginia, indeed the nation, afford to have him replaced with someone who knows naught about defense? 4. John Warner and I are both gun owners. We believe deeply in the 2nd Amendment All lawful people should be able to legally possess firearms if they wish. But we do not think it is imprudent to require that time be taken to run a criminal check on gun buyers. If the Brady Bill prevents one innocent's death - or another president from being shot - it is worth a small inconvenience to us law abiding citizens. 5. John Warner and I are both Christians. Though neither of us would likely win a "Mother Teresa Award" for piety, we do practice real Christian principles. However, we have neglected to make a pilgrimage to Virginia Beach to kiss the ring of Pope Pat, or be blessed by Cardinal Ralph, or have our political "Heaven Ticket", punched by Bishop Mike Farris. Our "herd instincts" for taking directions from TV preachers, and such like, are very poor. We certainly can not go along with excluding people of non-Christian religions, or no religion, from the political process! The so-called "Christian Right" controls Virginia's Republican Party apparatus, hence John Warner, who was not even invited by the apparatchiks to last weekend's convention, has had to take the extraordinary step of requiring a primary to select the Republican Senate Candidate. This may turn out for the best, since Senator Warner has served all Virginians equally well, it somehow seems right that we all should have the opportunity to keep him as our Senator. We all will lose if he can not stay on. 6. At this critical time, as we the people, and our fine Republican leadership, make government more responsive to the people and cheaper for us taxpayers, can we afford to replace the leadership, experience, seniority and prestige of Senior Senator John Warner with someone who has none of these attributes? Can we risk sending an unproven novice - one who has never held elected office - up against another well-financed slick young Democrat in November? I sav NO! If you say "yes", then "Slick Willie" will love you!
