The person most surprised at the First-place district winner in this year’s Trig-Star math contest was the winner himself.
“I thought I was slow,” said Mike Wolfe, a senior at Rappahannock County High School. “Everybody else was finishing fast.”
If “everybody else” finished faster than Mike, they must have gotten the answer wrong, because Mike was the first of'about 7$ students in the contest to arrive at the right answer. He answered the problem in 14 minutes, which his math teacher, Frieda Herman, says is remarkable.
“We had just finished studying the subject (of the problem in this year’s contest), so everything was fresh in my mind,” said Mike. “I thought it was pretty easy.
“You just had to know sine and cosine and the Law of Sines formula. They gave you a few different angles and you had to figure oiit the height of the pole.”
Mike recalled that he had to take a remedial math class in third grade, but ever since seventh grade he’s been an “A” student in the subject.
He will be entering Virginia Tech next year and is leaning toward an engineering degree.
