In addition to tailgate competitions, theme nights are also popular at the Friday series. Horse sport fans can watch their favorite hunter-jumper riders take to the arena for hunterjumper polo June 14. “Jockeys With Mallets” features jump jocks trying their hand at polo July 19; and in August foxhunters can be seen chasing the ball instead of the fox at the “Masters Of The Hunt” night. .
Polo in its arena form provides a much smaller and more viewable setting for the fast-pace than grass polo. The Meadow arena is surrounded by a viewing berm that affords spectators a hillside view of the game. “It’s like hockey on horseback,” explained club founding member Peter Arundel.
In addition to a core gro\ip of dedicated players, Great Meadow Polo runs a polo school at nearby Willow Run, providing instruction and training for beginner and inexperienced players. The students, some of whom graduate and become playing members at Great Meadow, have their own practices and games.
General admission for the Friday night games, which start at 7:30 each Friday through September, is $10 per carload. There are a few reserved tailgate memberships available; for information contact Judy .Olinger at (540) 687-3290.
