Since some members of thev Republican Party have accused’Senator Warner of being a traitor to the party’s interests by opposing.the - candidacy of Oliver North in the 1994 senatorial election, let me put .that, issue in focus. In the 1980s Mr. NbrflhC almost brought down the administration of President Reagan by his illconceived and amateurish effort to secure the release of a dozenAmerican hostages held under Iranian control by secretly selling TOW missiles and other military hardware to a so-called moderate faction of the' Iranian Government. This ridiculous1, “clandestine operation,” really an Iranian scam, blew up in North’s face,1 caused havoc in the U.S. Government^and ultimately North was obliged to appear before a Senate investigating; committee to explain his activities. Much later, North was convicted iri ' federal court of having violated two federal laws. An appeals court subso- ’ quently set that conviction aside only! because North had been promised immunity by the Senate committee before which he testified.
Although some in the Republican' Party blame Warner for North’s: defeat, it was a large majority of the voters in Virginia who made that happen. Senator Warner stood firmly for what he believed to be the good of the party, the Congress, and the nation as a whole. We did not want a convicted, felon in our Senate.
Integrity, conservative thoughtful,, leadership, and vast experience ar? among the many qualities possessed by Senator Warner. He should continue in the service of our country. Pleas®* vote for him on Tuesday, June 11th, in the Republican primary.
