Midwife Martha Hughes of Flint Hill has recently been charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter in a most unusual case in Loudoun County. If found guilty of the charge, .she could be sentenced up to 10 years ip the penitentiary. I The charge stems from an incident in January, 1995, when Ms. Hughes was acting as the midwife in a home birth, according to her attorney, David Bracken of Alexandria. The baby died because the umbilical cord became compressed.
The charge against Ms. Hughes has been brought against her by the prosecutor’s office in Leesburg. The parents of the dead infant, Nancy and Harrison Miner, do not blame Ms. Hughes for the death and are expected
