Tano has managed to earn all “A”s during his two years at Rappahannock, and he has not shied away from the difficult courses. This year he took Advanced Placement Government, Advanced Placement English, Calculus, Architectural Drawing, Problem Solving (a math class using computers), and Public Speaking.

Although he had studied English for eight years before coming, Tano was not certain what to expect of schools here. He thought he might be put back with younger students. Certainly he did not expect to become the class valedictorian.

He feels his academic success is not because RCHS is easy, but because the teachers are understanding, willing to explain again for a non-English speaker, and because their more hands-on teaching style is the way he finds learning easiest.

His first six weeks in school were the most difficult, and math class was harder than English class, he explained. He had to learn new terms and definitions. English was more what he had been used to in English classes in Uruguay.

The hardest thing to get used to about Rappahannock was the dependence on automo-' biles. In his home city he could get almost anywhere he wanted to go by walking. Here hej could not drive and found he always had tp depend on someone else to get anywhere.

Still life here is “nice,” he said. “Life here is slower than at home.” Here it is quiet, no cars, police sirens and ambulances going past the house at all hours of the day and night. At home his house was two blocks from a hospital, and those were the sounds of night time.
