The event began with registration on Friday afternoon at 3:30, followed by a picnic and fellowship. Jon Heddleston gave the opening prayer which was written by county resident Steve Young, a cancer survivor who received a bone marrow transplant several years ago.
The first part of the relay was the first lap walked by all survivors of cancer. Ester Settle said it was quite an emotional time. “It was very touching,” she said. At sundown, everyone lit luminaries in memory of someone with cancer, and David Clanagan and the Free Spirit sang gospel songs during the lighting.
