When you meet Mr. Raines, what you see is not necessarily what you get in the end.
Students often see a gruff, tough administrator, who tolerates no — zero — profanity on school grounds, no tobacco use, and certainly no drug or alcohol use. In Mr. Raines’s universe, teachers are to be respected, and students are to be disciplined for infractions swiftly and firmly.
What students eventually learn, however, is that he truly cares about them.
“They’re such good kids here,” Mr. Raines said in a recent interview with the Rappahannock News. “They are the best part about being here. I can’t wait to see them each morning. That’s what keeps me going.”
