The wet weather also leaves the crops more susceptible to the fungal diseases the sprays are designed to combat. “We’re stuck in a terrible weather system,” Mr, Love said. “This is a great habitat for fungal diseases that are transmitted when rain splashes on spores on leaves,” he added.
Not even those who have corn planted can rejoice in the weather, he said. Heavy rains can cause the nutrients in fertilizers to leach into the ground or run off. Erosion is increased as can be seen by the muddy run off. Bottom lands may be flooded resulting in crop loss.
