Jack Raines, the principal of Rappahannock County High School, takes everything seriously and nothing too seriously, which is why people initially meeting him often walk away puzzled.
Last year when he was RCHS athletic director, for example, a prospective parent asked him whether there was a girls’ soccer team at the school.
Mr. Raines let out a loud, highpitched cackle from his throat and replied, “What kind of school do you think this is? We’re lucky to have a boys’ soccer team.”
' Feeling slightly offended, the parent persisted, “Could my daughter play on the boys’ team?”
“Sure, why not? We believe in equality here,” followed by another one of those strange, trilling cackles.
