were excited and obviously enjoyed performing their songs to a full audience of enthusiastic parents on a weekday morning. Mrs. Russell, the school’s music teacher, brought together vocals, choreography and sign language.
The concert on Thursday evening filled the warm evening with patriotic music and song, highlighting the talents of the older elementary school children and the hours of dedicated work by their teachers. The spirit and sense of fun up on the stage and in the pit were infectious to the SRO audience. The room was filled with patriotic art from many RCES classes. Mrs. Moncrief taught each of her sections of band students to play their instruments and learn their songs.
Our schools’ music and arts programs have grown in scope and number through new arts events at the elementary and high school and the Curriculum Enrichment Program which has introduced the students *to exciting, top-flight professional performers.
These are very positive steps because recent studies both in the United States and in Europe have shown that arts education is a critical factor in improving overall learning in both math and language and in SAT scores.
1 am grateful for the unique qualities of this small school system which bring together the strengths and talents of our administrators, teachers, parents, and especially our students.
