Two houses caught fire on < Tuesday, most likely due to the light- ' ning storm in the early afternoon. <
The first call came in at 1:14 p.m. : A house belonging to Mildred Many of Many Lane in Sperryville suffered ! a fire which started in the basement I and spread briefly to the first floor, < according to Sperryville Chief Richie 1 Burke. He said that Ms. Lane told him i that she had seen flames shoot out of ( the wall behind the water heater. Mr. Burke said they had to tear out some 1 walls. The fire appeared to be electri- 1 cal, he said, and was probably caused i by lightning.
The house sustained only an estimated $500 damage, probably i because firemen were on the scene 1 within six minutes, said Mr. Burke. Besides Sperryville, units from Washington, Flint Hill and Amissville responded, along with Sheriff Gary Settle, Major Rick MacWelch amd Deputy Connie Compton.
