The project as presented by VDOT for Route 630 near Huntly goes way beyond the needs and the wants of the local residents. The residents of Rappahannock County have continuously expressed a strong desire to foster and maintain the rural scenic character of the county. 1 do not believe the residents want “wider and faster,” i.e. “urban” as a lifestyle mode.
This project has been designed with the seeming concept that bigger (read wider, straighter, more level, faster) is synonymous with “better.” This is a misconception, and is in direct conflict with the existing character and use level of this roadway.
Yes, the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors has included “improvements for Route 630” in their six-year road plan. The need they were addressing was firmly rooted in a drainage/flooding , problem: not, as stated in the Public Hearing Notice, to “...improve the horizontal and vertical alignment of Route 630 from Route 522 to 1.13 km (0.702 mi) west of Route 522.”
The drainage/flooding problem is substantially more localized than the .7 miles, and the problem is not entirely addressed by the project since key areas
