Recounting this was much too serious for him, so he chuckled and added, “I don’t think they’ve been disappointed.”

Mr. Raines was raised in the Shenandoah Valley. His father worked as an operator for Merck Pharmaceuticals in Elkton. and his mother worked at Sears. They raised turkeys on the side, which explains why Mr. Raines always contributes turkeys to school banquets.

All three of Mr. Raines’s siblings finished college and his sister also became an educator. “Education was driven down our throats by Dad,” says Mr. Raines, sounding ungrateful but smiling as he says it. He was raised in the Church of the Brethren, which he and his wife still attend.
