Recently I overheard this from a small group at the Post Office: "It's such a good place to live because it's beautiful no matter where you drive. , It's even fun to go to the grocery store." They were talking about the part of Virginia in which readers of this column live. I have heard this before and it is certainly true; the view from the driver's seat is glorious.
September splendor is especially noted along country roads. Though the tall rosy-red stalks of Joe Pye Weed are beginning to fade, we now have a parade of yellow from flowers of Qidens which spring up and seem to bloom overnight. Tire common name of this plant is Beggar Ticks or Pitch-forks. I use Bidens (there are about eight species in our area) because the common name summons up the seed which catch on socks and trouser legs when we walk among the plants
