A meeting for parents of sixth grade RCES students to discuss the Literacy Passport Tests (LPT) was held last Thursday night. Teachers of Sixth grade students were on hand to explain how they plan to prepare the students for the tests and how parents can help.
Only a few parents took advantage of the opportunity to attend the meeting.
Assistant Principal Richard Smith . explained that the LTP is a state mandated test given to sixth graders. If any section is not passed the student can take the test again, but all students have to pass all three parts before they can enter the ninth grade. He said that the students did not do very well on •the test last year, that an unsatisfactory percentage passed it. "We want to improve that," he said.
The LPT tests reading, writing and math and is untimed so students have all the time they need in order to finish it. The reading test includes 77 questions and the students needs to answer 43 correctly, said Mr. Smith, though that number can change from year to year. Passing for the math test is 61 to 65 out of 90, and for writing it is 24 out of 32.
The tests this school year will be given between February 3 and 12. Last year the school began giving writing predictor tests fo determine which students need help; this year that testing will be done in December. If a student takes the predictor test and does not do well enough to pass it, said Mr. Smith, he or she will be asked to give up some enrichment time to spend more time getting ready for the February tests.
Each of the sixth grade teachers gave suggestions for students to do well on the tests.
