Mother Ball was very direct and said exactly what was on her mind. She pretty much did exactly what she pleased and did not worry about conforming to others expectations of her. It was not unusual for her to stay up till 3 a.m. or so cooking a ham! She had a keen interest in the latest local news and was an excellent source for news. She could find out more by not leaving her house than anyone I knew. She also gave good advice. When I asked her how to get good weather for my wedding, she told me to put one drop of vodka on three magnolia leaves the night before. Sure enough, it worked!
Most important, however, is that Mother Ball had a great sense of humor. Her eyes would twinkle when she told a funny tale, and nothing would please her more than to see here guests laugh and have a good time.
The sun was shining and flowers were all about Thornton Hill as friends and family gathered to celebrate her life. It is clear that even though Mrs. Fletcher lived to be 107 years of age, those who knew here will always appreciate her youth!
