Remembering
Mother Ball
To the Editor
This Sunday the Fletcher family and Rappahannock community paid tribute to Mattie Ball Fletcher, affectionately known to many as Mother Ball.
I started to work as the county health nurse the year Mother Ball turned 100 and had the privilege to visit her while she lived independently in town. I decided to check Mother Ball and make sure she was taking her medicine correctly. However, I can assure you I was the one being checked on by Mother Ball and one of the many who she ministered to with her wit and wisdom. Whenever, I'd stand up to leave after a visit, she would take hold of my hand and say, "Appreciate your youth!" I've come to realize the many endearing qualities of Mother Ball that helped her retain her youth and vitality.
One thing that struck me the most about Mother Ball is that she never complained. Instead, she would always ask what she could do to help me or was there any one I knew that might need her help. She would offer money or other gifts to anyone I thought needed it, to cook, to do mending, her lunch, flowers, whatever she had. When she turned 105, she even offered to watch my infant son while I worked across the street and assured me she would call right away when he cried and needed nursing!
