Sheriff Gary Settle has also offered to assist' with bringing seniors to and from the center. "We have a van, and if it's not tied up transporting inmates, we're happy to make it available," he said, adding that in the past the van has been loaned to scouts and other community groups.
Already, the sheriffs department maintains a calling list for elderly people who live alone or stay alone during the day. "We have a call dispatcher who's behind the phone all day long, so the resource is right in front of us." The dispatcher makes daily calls to the seniors on the list. If there is no phone, deputies work check stops into their regular rounds. That is all part of community-based law enforcement. Sheriff Settle noted.
That spirit of community is also what is energizing the Senior Committee to work towards a senior center that will be much more than a nutrition site.
