To the Editor:
As a former teacher, I am appalled at the way Republicans, including John Warner and Frank Wolf, tried to shortchange our country's schoolchildren during the just-past 104th Congress.
The Republicans have repeatedly attempted to cut spending for vocational Education, special ed kids, student financial aid and for disadvangated children. It was only in the last few days of the 104th Congress, and only after Democrats were about to propose a rider requesting an additional $3.1 billion for education and job training, that Republicans reluctantly restored $2.3 billion they had previously cut in education funds.
When Congress cuts such education funds, it means that communities like ours either have to come up with more money out of our local taxes for these essential educational programs or fall behind.
And . when Bob Dole comes up with a cockamamie plan to cut everyone's taxes (rich and poor) by 15 percent, you can bet that the resulting reduction in government services will include federal educational cuts of some kind. What'll it be — eliminating college grants and loans, perhaps? And speaking of really crazy Republican ideas, one that Dole supported, is the idea that it is better to have the children of illegal immigrants on the streets, getting into trouble, perhaps committing crimes for lack of anything else to do, than to have them in school. Tell that to the police, many or whom, by the way, are supporting Bill Clinton this year.
Democrats in Congress, including Virginia Democratic candidates Mark Warner and Bob Weinberg, would support Bill Clinton in his future educational goals, among which are:
