The Smithsonian Chamber MusicSociety inaugurates its fifth season at the Theatre at Washington at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13 with a concert of music tracing the development of the cello and its repertoire.
The Society’s artistic director for the series, cellist and conductor Kenneth Slowik, is joined by its founder, harpsichordist James Weaver, and cellist Carla Rosenberg, a longtime Society collaborator. A pre-concert talk begins at 3:30.
Johann Sebastian Bach's monumental set of six unaccompanied works still forms the backbone of the cello literature. Mr. Slowik performs the Suite in D Minor, the second composition in the set. The program includes music for cello by 17th and 18th century Italian composers Gabrielli, Geminiani, Vivaldi, and Boccherini.
