Rappahannock News Contributing Writer „ The Rappahannock Athletic Association Senior Babe Ruth team, coached by Henry Digges has a lot to be proud of.
After winning its season opener 120 over Warrenton the team has continued to compile a mid-season record of 5-1-2. "In fall ball we do not play .extra innings," explained Coach Digges. "I'm very pleased and excited with a number of things I have seen this fall.
"We are experiencing a team camaraderie that we have not experienced in some time. The boys are playing together as a team and working hard on thfeir individual games. It's refreshing to see such a change in attitudes.
'•'Typically the fall season is a carry over from the summer and the guy's are out to have fun. This year is different. Players are more focussed and hungry and want to be respected by their competition and be known as winners."
The big guns for the team have been Andy Grimsley and Jon Digges oh the mound. Combined they are posting an ERA of 1.58. Andy has a record of three wins and one loss with an Earned Run Average of 1.21 runs per seven-inning game. Jon has two wins, no loses and two ties. His •Earned Run Average is 1.86 runs per seven-inning game. , Offensively it has been a team effort with impressive games from freshman Alex Baumgardner, Irvin Phillips, and Tommy Settle. Alex on .the year is hitting .348, Irvin .350, and •Tommy .364. ■ * "We still have a ways to go and itjore to accomplish before the season efids," added Coach Digges. The loss to Loudoun County on Saturday was a disappointing one. "We felt like we beat ourselves by committing a few mental mistakes and Loudoun was aggressive by capitalizing on them. The only thing that makes me feel better is that we play them again Thursday night in Loudoun. I'm confident in my players that we will eliminate our mistakes and come home With a win." • The team's next home game is Sunday, Oct. 20, at Stuart Field in Amissville.
