There are criteria which families must meet to be eligible. "We need families which are fairly stable," Mr. Darby said. "Usually these are one or two parent families, with children, which are functioning well.
"The difficulties we run into are when a boyfriend or ex-spouse are involved with the family and the situation is disruptive."
Mr. Darby said Habitat is concerned primarily with those in the household and once in a while with children of the family who are in financial difficulty.
"As we get a qualified family, I organize the effort around that family. As soon as we get a family we begin fund raising and work. There is no lingering responsibility for those who volunteer their service once the home is finished," he said.
