The board also received a report explaining why the cafeterias are losing money. Some students resist the "healthy menus" the schools are required to serve; the schools have been required to increase the portions with no increase in price; at the high school one lunch shift is much larger than the other. This shift has lines so long that more students are bringing lunches from home or buying snacks.
Mr. Raines and several elementary school teachers described ways they try to satisfy parents. Most elementary school classroom teachers send out weekly newsletters to parents. Additionally they try to accommodate reasonable parent requests and try to keep lines of communication open with parents.
Mr. Raines reported that the state requires every student to study world history in eighth and ninth grades and world geography in tenth grade along with American history for juniors and Virginia and American government for seniors, which means that he will need an additional social studies teacher next year.
The board approved fundraising requests for the curriculum enrichment committee and the artist in residence program. Board members also supported a request by the Athletic Boosters to raise money by allowing local businesses to order vinyl signs to be placed along the fence of the baseball field.
Superintendent David Gangel was unable to attend the meeting. As a result there was no detailed information on the upcoming budget. Dr. Gangel will present the budget to the School Board at a special meeting TUesday, March 4; There will be an opportunity for the public to respond at the regular March 11 meeting.
