Although she had no comparison figures from 1995-96, Miss Biggs said She was very pleased that 73 percent pf the high schoolers have missed four pr fewer days this year. ' Mrs. Biggs said there are still problems with "perceptions” of some parents about the attendance policy and problems with working out the procedures for making exceptions, but Tl think the data show we have increased attendance." ‘ Board member Bryant Lee commented that the switch to block scheduling may have worked also to improve attendance, since students realize when they miss a day they are missing more school work.
Chairman John Tole noted that the Rappahannock school system's poor record on attendance was cited in a report on the state’s schools. "We're improving," he said. , Helen Williams, director of pupil personnel, provided the board with statistics on growing enrollment in special education classes. In 1988 there were 142 special education students, compared to 182 this year. In the meantime the growth in the number of students in self-contained classrooms is even more dramatic, she noted. It has more than doubled from 32 in 1988 to 65 this year. Special education students who spend 50 percent or more of their day with special education teachers are counted as "self contained," Mrs. Williams explained.
