and made it quite clear that our behavior was a reflection of all Rappahannock. We felt like we were United States Ambassadors! She also had a no nonsense way of handling problems. I was told when one "well endowed" young lady would not wear a bra to school, Mrs. Quaintance promptly gave the girl her own bra and the problem was solved!
In later years, I enjoyed accompanying my father on visits to Mary Bott's stone house in the F.T. Valley bearing vegetables from his garden. She was always so charming and entertaining. I loved hearing about the legendary Sperryville girls basketball team that Mary Bott's coached in the 1930s. People came from all over to see them because they fought like tigers and played to win.
After the games Mary Botts would take them to the Cab Inn to dance and then individually drive them all home. Daddy has always declared Mary Bott's to be the best dancer he ever danced with. In his words, "Like a good horse, she never had a foot in the wrong place." There can be no doubt that in the race of life, Mary Botts Quaintance Snead was a true thoroughbred!
