Essay contest underway
The Culpeper Minute Men Chapter, NSDAR is sponsoring an essay contest for students in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades. This year’s topic is “Forts in American History”. Any fort built before 1890 on land now part of the United States may be an essay topic. Rules of the contest have been sent to all county schools. Cash prizes will be awarded to winning essays in each grade level. Essays must be submitted by Dec. 1. For more information contact your school or Sarah Cheatwood at 347-2872.
Computer Club Forming
Anyone between the ages of 9-19 years old interested in joining the 4-H Computer Club should call the Extension Office at 675-3619. The 4-H Computer Club will learn how to make a web page. Meeting dates will be determined at a later date.
Town Christmas celebration set
Celebrate an “Old-Fashioned Christmas” on Dec. 6 in the Ibwn of Washington, where there will be carolers strolling the village streets, horse drawn carriages, open house at shops and galleries and a special Santa giving treats to children from the porch of the Clopton House on Main Street. The Rappahannock Historical Society will sponsor old-fashioned games for children. There will be a special Christmas performance by the Montpelier Singers at The Theatre from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The Washington Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a dinner at the fire hall.
Ragged Mountain activities
The Ragged Mountain Resource Center located at Oldway Art Center in Sperryville has the following activities scheduled:
On Dec. 13 final second Saturday series hike for 1997, meet at Mountainside Market, followed by final Full Moon hike for 1997 of Old Rag Mountain for those still able...For information on these activities call 987-3366.
Alumni basketball tournament set
The Rappahannock County High School Athletic Department will sponsor the ninth annual Alumni Basketball Tournament on Friday, Nov. 28 and Saturday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. For more information call Kelly Settle at 987-8575.
