Once determination is made of which children may participate, contact is made with the guardians/parents for their approval. The children will meet at the Sheriff’s Office and will be driven to KMart in Warrenton. Once at the store, the child is paired up with a uniform officer. Each child then can purchase $100 worth of merchandise of their choosing.
A large portion of the money will be used for items of personal need, such as clothing, shoes, etc. Assistance in this area will be given by the deputy assigned to the child.
Once the shopping spree is completed, the children will be eating breakfast at the Warrenton Fire Hall with Santa. Many volunteers will be busy wrapping the presents the children have purchased. These will be ready for the children when they arrive back at the Sheriffs Office.
Some benefits of this program are:
• It places the child in a positive one-to-one contact with a law enforcement officer. In many cases, this is the first time the child has hgd contact of this type.
• It affords the child the chance to have something a little special for those Christmas memories.
