Public meeting on high school addition
Dr. Gangel reminded attendees that a public meeting would be held on April 29 at 7:30 PM in the RCHS auditorium concerning the development of the RCHS addition. Though the basic addition design has been determined, public comment can still affect the school exterior, site appearance, and aesthetics, and he invited all to attend.
Peer mediation
Susan Fox spoke about the peer mediation program at RCHS. She and Jason Gochenour are responsible for mediation training and administration, and have enjoyed great success this year. The school has twenty trained mediators, and has begun to train all eighth graders in mediation principles. At the end of the school year, addition mediator-designees Will be selected from the eighth grade for additional training and participation in the program during ninth grade.
So far this year the student mediators have participated in 28 cases, all of which reached successful conclusions. Conflicts are mediated when referred by students or school administration, and as a condition for returning to school after a suspension. Mediation training involves the skills including listening, reading of body language, playacting, brainstorming, and getting people to talk to one another. The program has proven effective, and mediation was recently employed to resolve a conflict invloving 16 students.
