Steven Spielberg received the Best Director Academy Award for this movie that has been applauded by World War II veterans for its lifelike re-creation of the Normapdy invasion and search for a young paratrooper, the sole survivor of four brothers.
Spielberg, determined that his "cast would experience the terrors and triumphs of D-Day as more than just make-believe, sent them to boot camp and even hired a Marine veteran to make sure that the actors didn’t do or say anything during filming that would dishonor the memory of the fighting men.
