She was born Nov. 16, 1920 in San Francisco, the daughter of LCDR and Mrs. William T. Lightle. She attended Castellejo School, Scripps College and graduated from Stanford University with a degree in geology.
She entered the US Navy in 1941 as a WAVE officer and served several years in Communications Intelligence for which she was awarded a Letter of Commendation by the Secretary of the Navy in 1946. She was then employed as an analyst by the Central Intelligence Agency and also was awarded a Master of Arts degree in history »by Georgetown University.
In October 1952, she married LCDR George H. Sharp, U. S. Navy.
They lived in a variety of locations including San Diego, Japan and suburban Maryland.
In 1968 the Sharps purchased Mountain Green Farm
