bush honeysuckles (which are not in the Honeysuckle Family). Confused? So am I. Seeming inconsistencies and contradictions in botanical nomenclature reflect centuries of mixing of Latin, English and science. For me it has charm.

Spicebush is well-named and delights the senses at all times of the year. The flowers are fragrant though it is a subtle perfume. One has to get quite close and, if you are that close, take time to admire the perfect symmetry of the flowers. The alternate leaves are simple and entire (no teeth) and range from 2-6 inches long.

One of the charms of this shrub is that one plant will display leaves of many sizes but the same shape. Later, when the leaves appear, crush one and be prepared for pleasure. The odor is pleasantly distinctive.
