Each team tries to keep at least one member out on the track and walking throughout the night until the relay is over.
For those on the sidelines, there is much to do. There is food, entertainment, games, more food, and of course, sleeping. Most teams bring their own tents or recreation vehicles.
The teams and their members are the major developers of funds, raising contributions from stores and businesses who agree to be team sponsors and also getting donations from friends, neighbors, and fellow workers. Many of the teams have been organized by cancer survivors or by the families of persons who have died of cancer.
The teams and persons who raise the most money will be singled out for special recognition. However, the relay itself has neither winners nor losers. Indeed, the event slogan is: “There is no finish line until we find a cure!”
