Enthusiastic planners are working to make this year’s campaign to raise funds for the American Cancer Society the best ever in Rappahannock County. They urge every one to be a part of it, if only by making a financial donation.
But campaign workers say that it is also fun and rewarding to help get things ready and even more fun to be on one of the participating teams. This is especially so for persons who have survived cancer or who have lost loved ones to cancer.
As it has for the last several years, planning centers around a single event: an American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
Unlike the last few years, however, instead of joining with Fauquier County in an area wide event, we will have our own relay right here in Rappahannock County.
The over-night event starts on Friday, May 21 and continues through the following Saturday morning. It will take place on the grounds of the Rappahannock Elementary School.
The relay is the culmination of the fund-raising drive. Throughout the evening and into the next morning, members from participating teams are out walking on a track which is illuminated with candles in paper bags, called illuminaria.
Each illuminaria has the name of a cancer victim or cancer survivor and has been purchased as a memorial or tribute. It is a stirring moment indeed when the candles are lit and can first be seen lined up and stretched down the track into the distance. The hundreds of lights are vivid reminders of cancer’s toll.
