Someone else asked about election computers. 2000 is, after all, a presidential election. Cloud said that computers seem to be ready. But if there is a problem, we would have to resort to paper counters.

On the issue of health care, there is good news bad news. The bad news is that hospitals have a lot of equipment. The good news is that there are a limited number of vendors that supply such equipment. Cloud also suggested that some hospitals will merge to better handle the costs of Y2K compliance, which can be expensive.

As far as police and fire and rescue, most agencies have a small number of equipment that would be affected. Cloud mentioned that most counties and cities have a Y2K coordinator to assure compliance with all local emergency systems.

Scott Nininger, Y2K coordi-. nator for Union Bankshares, wrapped the seminar up by reminding everybody that as long as your money is in the bank, it is FDIC insured.

He also warned people to take care of themselves when using ATMs, traveler’s cheques and other financial services after the year 2000 starts. The banking industry is concerned that the criminal element will increase sharply during that time. He also reiterated that business owners should make sure that their vendors are compliant and explore alternatives.
