“Not dirt, Meredith, soil,” Hank says.

Hank went on to technical direct The Bams at Wolf Trap in Vienna when it first opened. He stayed with them for two years. Now his main contribution to the theater is to stage manage, light, and set up events for Wendy Weinberg at The Theater in Washington.

Hank bought the property at Rush River Lane in 1975 and on May 16, 1982, Meredith and Hank were married under the tulip tree in the front yard.

Meredith worked on and off at The Inn in Washington between 1983 and 1990.

Meredith says, “We were expected to know wines and I didn’t know anything. (Patrick O’Connell and Reinhardt Lynch) were younger, but wanted to get to the same place, they wanted to be the very best. And they made us want to be the best.”

“I took a grape growing course in 1984 with Jim « Law, the owner of Linden Vineyards. The vineyard ^ at Linden was planted in 1985 and I worked for them. I worked outdoors and on the winery itself.”

The winery at Linden was completed in the spring of 1988. And with the money Meredith had made at The Inn, she was qble to buy everything to plant the two acres of grapes on her property.

Meredith and Hank went to work with Richard and Lynn Mahan in 1990, when they opened their restaurant, Oliver’s, in Front Royal. Meredith waited on Phyllis Richman, the restaurant critic from the Washington Post, when she came to review the restaurant that year. The service and food was praised, and you can find the Mahans cooking at the Bleu Rock Inn today.

Now the Gorfeins are concentrating on staying at home where there is plenty to do. Their vegetable garden is a quarter acre, the vineyards have expanded from two to three acres, and they have just completed an addition to their home, a lovely office/living room area where Hank can watch his beloved Knicks games, surrounded by all their books and a meandering cat or two.

You may see Meredith conducting a wine tasting at Linden Vineyards on the weekends, and Hank has been spotted giving wine tastings at The Bleu Rock Inn on Saturdays and Sundays as well.
