tabling of funds for a retirement program, $25,000 was cut from the fire services fund. The total appropriation, as a result, will be $11,983,921.

The board also adopted the FY 2000 budget by a unanimous vote. McCarthy will need to make a change in the final draft to reflect the cut in the fire services fund.

By a 4-1 vote, the board set tax rates for tax year 1999. Levies are set at 78 cents per $100 assessed valuation of real estate and $3 per $100 assessed valuation of tangible personal property.

For the Fire Levy, rates are set at three cents per $100 of assessed value of real estate and 20 cents per $100 of assessed value of tangible personal property. As per the earlier motion that passed, taxes are based on usevalue taxation.

The dissenting vote came from Frazier. He thought that because a tax increase next year seems likely, the board should give taxpayers a break and reduce the 78 cent levy to 77 cents for this year. The other members, however, did not agree. Welch commented that lowering taxes this year would lead to a bigger increase next year.

Other business

The board approved payment of year-end bills. McCarthy noted that the Sheriff’s Office will be returning approximately $18,000 in surplus money to the general fund.
