Hunt, a wildlife biologist who has worked with bears for over 20 years, uses Karelian Bear Dogs to drive bears away from places they don’t belong and convince them to avoid people. Normally, these dogs will hold a bear at bay or scare them off into the woods. But occasionally, they will drive a bear up a tree.
The ancestry of Karelian Bear Dogs goes back many centuries. However, the first actual appearance of this breed was at a dog show held in Finland in 1936. They were developed to hunt big game, particularly moose and bear, and are named as such because these particular dogs originated in the Karelia province of Finland. Less than 900 pureblood Karelians are registered annually by Finnish Breeders.
