TCE ground water
contamination
The contamination, according to Mike Williams of Joyce Engineering, resulted from spillage of dry cleaning fluids in the plant over a 30 year period, and the leakage of these fluids into the ground water, creating a plume that has moved to the northwest. Mr. Williams displayed a group of “time series concentration graphs” that indicated the concentration of TCE and its degradation products in the monitoring wells from 1993 to the Spring of this year.
The graphs showed a significant decline in the concentrations in all wells, and he attributed the declines to natural attenuation. The concentration of TCE in one well, for examS pie, was 80 micrograms per liter in December of 1994, and that dropped to less than 10 micrograms per liter in December of 1999. In general, a concentration of 5 micrograms per liter is deemed acceptable and, according to Mr. Williams, it could take from 5 to 20 years to achieve that level of remediation.
