Angela Bassett (as the school’s principal), as well as a variety of other folks, assist in staging the concert, which ultimately is scheduled for Carnegie Hall. The real Isaac Stem, (a truly beautiful old man), introduces Roberta to the Hall and tells her he feels the spirits of all the previous musicians (Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff) whose music has been played in the Hall. The fund raising concert is absolutely fabulous, seeing all those lovely, shining little faces (a real rainbow of races, too) playing their finest, along with famous stars and former students, brought tears to Herb’s eyes. Cloris Leachman has a great role as Roberta’s nagging mother, Aidan Quinn is a brief love interest, and Gloria Estefen plays another teacher. All fine performances, and an all around fabulous film suitable for any audience. Three thumbs up from Naomi.
