Mrs. Ethel M. Tyner, nee Atkins, native of the Sperryville Old Hollow sections of Rappahannock County, celebrated her 105th birthday on June 17. She has been a resident of Village Nursing Center in Fork Union, Virginia for the past three years.
Upon our visit, my mother and I found her very alert, inquisitive and responsive to both the present and past. She no longer wears her hearing aid or glasses so one has to get close to her and talk loudly, but she does hear. She is in remarkably good health for her advanced years.
Her appetite is good. Mrs. Tyner thought it was the medicine she took that gave her such an appetite. She even dipped her finger into the small birthday cake we took her, sampling the frosting, commenting how good it was.
She has gained a little weight too, now at 86 pounds up from only 74
