The Board debated and approved the compensation for vacation and holiday time that was largely funded through elimination of; other budget line items, and approved half of the proposed supplement for the chief deputy (approximately $2600), but did hot consider that $22,800 supplement for the deputies.
After dispensing with the Sheriffs request, the Board considered the adoption of the bud-, get, the appropriation, and the tax levy. A $4,761,204 general fund appropriation, $14,192,222 in total appropriations, a tax levy of $0.82 per hundred, and a fire levy of $0.04 per hundred was considered and approved by a vote of 4 to 1.
The lone dissenter, Supervisor Ron Frazier of the Jackson District, informed the Board that “I’m going to find myself voting against the budget largely because it will require a tax increase . . . because (the Board) voted to approve the school budget in full dispute of the fact that there will be a lower enrollment.’’ Mr. Frazier went on to explain that he objects because it is costing more this year to deliver less service, and he expressed his feeling that “we were held hostage by teachers talking to students and threatening to leave if they didn’t get more money.”

Cordani resigns
Included in the meeting package, but not discussed, was a letter of resignation from Jackson District School Board member Rebecca Cordani. In her letter of resignation to School Board Chair Rosa Crocker, Ms. Cordani explained that her resignation was due to the need to provide special care for her youngest child, and to prioritize her activities. “The School Board is not a priority for me right now and I believe that the community deserves someone who can make it one,” she wrote.
The vacancy created by Ms. Cordani’s resignation will be filled, for the remainder of her term, by a special election to be held in the Jackson District on Nov. 7, 2000.
