the Fourth of July, the After Prom Party and any number of charitable projects such as collecting Campbell’s soup labels, GM box tops, or Giant receipts, all in exchange for corporate contributions.
At any school related gathering, you are likely to find Mrs. Makela working hard, moving tables, giving Out awards, and generally making all the work fun.
When you talk to Mrs. Makela, though, the important thing is not what she does, but what everyone else is doing: “I love my job because it gives me a chance to toot other people’s horns. I’ve been here for five years, and I still feel ... there are so many incredible things happening on a day to day basis in this school system that it is impossible for any one person to know about it all...
Teachers take the initiative every day of their lives to do wonderful things, they just do these things because they need to be done and they’re wonderful, and they don’t tell anyone. I’m constantly finding out about new things that are happening.”
Mrs. Makela is prone to wax poetic about the many dedicated people with whom she works, and their accomplishments, but when asked if there was any area where more volunteers would help a lot, she confided that she wishes “very much that we had more tutors in the area.
