attacking deep fly balls to the outfield and comes up with what seem to be impossible catches at the time.
Rank rookie Caroline LeVans of Scrabble filling in for the absent regular short stop Becky Willoughby of Amissville, did a most able job in only her second appearance in the position this season. The youngest member of the team at only 12, Caroline began playing softball just last fall and has come a long way on sheer determination.
In her first year of 16 and under competition, first baseman Nicole Brown of Washington was responsible for putting a number of Madison players out. An intimidating batter with a very strong throwing arm, she’s proven to be a key member of the Peaches all spring.
Rounded out by gutsy rookies Eileen Cummings of Rixeyville at center field and Michelle Kennedy at right field, the Peaches came from behind to win the game in the last inning. Eileen, a former soccer player who feels right at home out in center (knee brace, stitches in her forehead, and all) fearlessly stops balls hit her way, handling them with greater confidence in every game. Michelle, despite the sun in her eyes the whole game, kept her focus and completed several critical plays. As usual, she got in her share of base hits.
The Rappahannock Lions Club sponsored Peaches competed against Orange, Greene and Madison Counties this year as the youngest team in the district with an average player age of only 13 years. They will compete at the district level as a 14 and under team minus their mature 16 year old anchor, Jessica Nawrocki, who will move on to ably aid coaches Mauri and Bill Payne as assistant coach. Other members of the Peaches not present for the day in Madison who will play tournament are Brittany Davis of Chester Gap and Mattie Nawrocki of Washington.
